Croma started as a family pharmacy. In 1976, the company was founded by pharmacist couple Karin and Gerhard Prinz. The family’s scientific background has greatly influenced the company. Since its foundation, the Prinz family has been striving for innovation, first by in-licensing innovative products, then by researching and developing its own products later on. Today, Croma strongly focuses on in-house research and development of new products to drive the company's long-term growth.

The R&D team concentrates on the development of next-generation biopolymers and composites. Croma’s clinical development team has an impressive track record of successfully completing global development programmes for devices and drugs.  

The company also maintains numerous collaborations with national and international research institutes. Spending on R&D amounts to an impressive 15 per cent of annual sales.
